Literacy and NFE Policy Analysis work
If youth and adult education, particularly literacy, is to become a higher priority it requires effective Non Formal Education (NFE)policies to be in place, implemented, monitored and evaluated. In 2008 Pamoja West Africa, in partnership with the African Platform for Adult Education and dvv international Mali, designed and coordinated an analysis of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) and NFE policy documents in francophone West African countries in order to establish the place of literacy in development and education policies in the countries concerned (Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Morocco, Senegal and Togo).
Representatives of government, civil society and education specialists carried out national level analyses and then shared their findings to produce a consolidated francophone West African report and subsequently an advocacy document that contributed to the preparations for CONFINTEA VI based on the findings.
In 2009 a similar process took place in Southern Africa, coordinated by the South Africa Reflect Network (SARN).
In 2010 Pamoja West Africa succeeded in mobilising funds to repeat the process in anglophone countries (The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Supported by Action Aid (Africa West and Central Regional office), ADEA's NFE Working Group, dvv International and UNESCO's Institute for Lifelong Learning, National Pamojas in the 5 countries concerned coordinated the analysis bringing together government, civil society and academics and findings were shared at a meeting in Accra in October 2010.
